Simple versus Digital Signature: Which one should I choose?

The iLovePDF e-Sign tool offers the option to sign with a Simple electronic signature or a Digital Signature. While both types are legally recognized, one is more advanced than the other.

Simple signature

The Simple option allows you to sign PDF with a standard electronic signature. It's essentially just a digital version of your handwritten signature placed on a PDF. This type of signature is used for signing documents that don’t carry legal weight, for example, when a parent sends a consent form to a teacher.

Digital signature

If you need to sign an NDA or another important business document like a contract, it’s recommended that you sign with the Digital Signature. The Digital Signature is more secure because it contains an eIDAS certified timestamp seal, and abides to strict international standards including ESIGN, EUTA, and eIDAS.

Companies and individuals handling agreements in regulated industries can choose this option to strengthen the legal validity of the signed document. To learn more about the different signature types and their uses, read our post "Why sign with a Digital Signature?".
